Cutscenes for Chapter 1

After testing the first half of this chapter, I have set to work on the second half. This includes making cutscenes to tie the story together. Since I've been having a fair load of complaints about the storyline for Howls in the Dark, it seemed like a good idea to make what's happening clearer.

Furthermore, it also helps me to see where I want to go with this story, and adds character to the antagonists. And on top of that, it's nice and easy. No wondering about dialogue trees, checking whether available responses cover the entire range of player styles, none of that. Everything is under my control, bwahahahaha! Errm, forget that last bit, it's late and I should probably go to bed soon.

I've made about six of these cutscenes now, and I think they work well. When I'm done, I'll work some more on the buildup to the conclusion for Chapter 1, and after that it's time for my favorite chore: the fleshing out of the player's companions.

  1. Your screenshots are so particular,I'm beginning to wonder what kind of setting will be...so far it seems to have a certain european medieval vibe, like in the witcher...I may be wrong, but I wonder if you'll be using FR lore at all.

Still keeping my finger crossed for the player's companions fleshing out part :P

  2. Hi Deedlit,

It will be set in the Forgotten Realms, but in the way Howls in the Dark was also set in the Forgotten Realms. So the main setting will be made up by myself, but there will be references to more well-known places.

The story will take place somewhere in the north of Faerun, somewhere between the High Forest and the Glimmerwood.

The reason for this is that although I like the Forgotten Realms, I don't want to get things wrong and upset people. Plus, this way I can use the Forgotten Realms pantheon and add some more background.

I'm glad you detect the medieval vibe from the screenshots, that was exactly what I was going for :-)

It's a vampire story, and as far as I'm concerned that has to include a dark, dreary castle, frightened villagers, haunted nights and all that. Since I'm European, medieval Britain and Germany come to mind and I'm building my areas based on that.

Haven't started yet with the companions, I first want to get the storyline of Chapter 1 finished. Usually I write down a couple of characteristics and background for each companion, play through the game with these in mind. That gives me some inspiration to express their characters; eg. in this dialogue Grimgur would say this, when this happens Aramir reacts like that.
